Outfit Post: Grant's Tomb

What a beautiful weekend we had in NYC! It was 70 on Friday, which was a huge tease. The sun was out all day Saturday and there was no sign of any clouds. Greg and I thought it would be the perfect day to go to General Grant's Tomb. We have been meaning to check it out for a while now - especially Greg since he is a U.S. History nerd. Particularly when it comes to the Civil War. I mean, sometimes I think he knows just as much as Shelby Foote!

Shirt: Urban sale
Skirt: J.Crew
Tights: Filene's Basement
Shoes: Berk's Shoes in Cambridge

I love this shirt. It was $10 on sale and it has the cutest little rooster print on it. I like to think of it as my neighborhood shirt since apparently (from what I can hear out my window) a rooster now lives around the corner from me. In Bushwick Brooklyn!

The monument is a really pretty structure, but the exhibits are basic and simple once you get inside. I would have liked to go on a Park Ranger tour, but we had just missed one. We did our own exploring and found this bronze bust of General Sherman right by the tomb on General Grant and his wife. Sherman is our favorite Civil War General because he was neurotic and depressed a lot, but was almost always correct and consistent in his thoughts out the war. Plus he marched through the South burning everything in his path, which is pretty bad ass. I also love how his hair is disheveled and kinda crazy in every official photograph of him.

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the Upper West Side and generally just enjoying the weather. There were some flowers pushing their way through the sea of old leaves and fallen twigs left over from Fall and Winter. I had never been up past Columbia and didn't know what to expect of the neighborhood, but I really really loved it. The river is gorgeous and all the cathedrals, churches and apartment buildings are amazing.

I can't really imagine any part of Manhattan being like farmland, but it was until the late 19th century. In fact, Grant lived in a cottage on East 66th Street, which is even further south than his tomb! It's interesting to think about Madison and Park Avenues filled with cows and sheep. How things change.

I hope to do some more Manhattan History exploring as it continues to warm up!

Get it, girl.

I'm looking forward to when you and Greg come to visit me in Georgia and we can retrace Sherman's March to the Sea in (hopefully) a pickup truck!
