Mary Marie
Speaking of things that put you in the mood for summer... The film Mary Marie definitely makes me long for a summer adventure to a remote country location.
The film was written, directed and stars Alexandra Roxo and her good friend Alana Kearns-Green. The two met at NYU where they were both studying acting. Since then Alexandra has moved into short film making and photography, but both her and Alana wanted to make something where they could act together. The intentionally ambiguous relationship between the girls is the center point of their first full length movie, Mary Marie.
Alexandra Roxo lives in Brooklyn and I was lucky enough to meet her for some coffee this week. She was able to give me the inside scoop on some of the choices that were made in regards to the styling, which I was super excited to hear about because it's definitely my favorite part about the movie.
Some of the costumes are from Alexandra's own closet, but it turns out that Alana's grandma also has a pretty fantastic stash of vintage goodies! A large portion of the film was shot at Alana's grandparents house in PA where they discovered closets full of pretty dresses and shoes.
I love that almost all of the costumes are vintage, thrifted or restructured garments and the outfits are basically my ideal summer wardrobe. The girls wear perfect cotton dresses in pretty pastels and whites adorned with delicate details like lace and embroidery while lazying about in their childhood home. I also love that they go to a carnival at one point because that was always a huge highlight of my summer growing up, and to this day I still love going solely for nostalgic purposes.
This film has definitely been a labor of love (and two years in the making!) for Alexandra and Alana. If you're going to be in the NYC area in the next week or two then you should definitely check it out!
The film is showing at the Brooklyn Film Festival on June 4th and June 10th. Get your tickets here.
